John Muir Award 11-17 years

8 April @ 9:30 am - 12 April @ 4:00 pm

£165.00
Scout groups
The John Muir Award is an environmental award scheme focused on wild places. It is inclusive, accessible and non-competitive, though should challenge each participant.  The Award encourages awareness and responsibility for the natural environment through a structured yet adaptable scheme, in a spirit of fun, adventure and exploration.

It’s open to all who can understand and meet the Award Criteria. It is ideally suited for those participants working at the later stage of primary education and beyond.

There are three levels of awards:

· Discovery Award – four days/25+ hours minimum time commitment
· Explorer Award – eight days/50+ hours
· Conserver Award – 20 days/125+ hours across at least six months

The Award will take place at our woodland site in Bovey Tracey, running 9:30am-4pm on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday. Thursday allows for a days reflection before completing the award on Friday.  This is a non-residential course, so participants will need to arrive at the car park at 9:30am each day and leave/be collected from the car park at 4pm.

Following successful completion, attendees will be invited back, with their families/friends for an awards ceremony, where they will receive their completion certificate.

During the award participants will complete a range of conservation, environmental and bushcraft activities, following our structured programme. This will include, along with a range of other activities, tree and plant identification, safe tool use, woodland maintenance, basic navigation, leave-no-trace principles, bushcraft practices including fire lighting and rope work.

Participants will leave with a sense of achievement, both physical and mental, lots of new skills and a greater appreciation for the environment.

Participants will be expected to carry out a range of tasks, suitable for their abilities, which will both be at times physically and mentally challenging, so will require self-motivation and a desire to achieve the award.

Please bring a packed lunch, snacks and drink. Full joining instructions will be sent in the week prior to the activity starting.

Tickets are £165 per child.
