About the Event
As we enter the colder months, the role of fire becomes even more important. This course continues from the fundamentals of fire lighting that we teach on our Introduction to Bushcraft Course, but that is not a prerequisite for attendance of this course, as we recap those elements.
After an initial safety brief we discuss the tools that we will be using during the day, their safe handling and how to care for them.
We explore ancient fire lighting and how the use of fire has developed over time, in turn leading to the progression to more modern techniques. You will practice creating fire using many different techniques, such as from the sun, matches, friction fire and lighters.
We will look in depth at how to build a sustainable fire, even in adverse weather conditions, using natural and man-made resources.
We introduce the concept of “leave no trace”, thereby ensuring that the fire site is left as it was found. Fire is not permitted in the majority of public areas and generally only with landowner permission, so we spend some time discussing alternatives.
