Foraging is identification first

A hedgerow or woodland edge becomes far more interesting once you begin recognising individual species, habitats and seasonal clues. But useful foraging starts with careful identification rather than guesswork.

Identify

Build a repeatable identification process and learn why photographs or phone apps alone should never be treated as proof that something is safe to eat.

Understand

Explore common edible species, important lookalikes, which parts are used and relevant preparation considerations.

Harvest Responsibly

Consider seasonality, habitat, permission, legal issues and leaving enough for wildlife, regeneration and other people.

What you can learn

  • A reliable plant-identification process
  • Common edible species and important lookalikes
  • Seasonality and habitat
  • Responsible and sustainable harvesting
  • Access, landowner and legal considerations
  • Ways to use selected wild foods

Safety comes before tasting.

Never eat a wild plant or fungus unless its identity and edibility are established with confidence from reliable information. People can react differently to foods and some species require particular preparation. If you have allergies, medical concerns or take medication, seek appropriate professional advice before eating unfamiliar wild foods.

A good place to start for beginners

You don’t need previous experience. A guided session helps you develop observation habits that are difficult to learn from photographs alone. The plants and fungi encountered vary with season, weather and location, so each walk follows what is actually present on the day. Tell us if you are especially interested in mushrooms or another wild food when asking about a private session; we can explain what may be suitable for the date and instructor.

Our beginner foraging guide is a useful introduction before attending. You can also explore our wider bushcraft courses in Devon.
